Paintings to make you smile
Painting has to be fun according to Penny Verco who’s painting of a dingo, an emu and a frill neck lizard is on the front cover of the October 2024 issue.
“My favourite subjects are animals,” said Penny. “When I look into an animal’s eyes I
see personality and emotion, but when I look at a tree I see nothing, so in recent
years I’m getting joy from painting animals.”
Penny’s cartoon-like characters won three awards at this year’s SALA competition held at the Mawson Centre. Penny said that having the SALA exhibition on display for a month gave people the chance to walk past and stop and talk.
“I like to see people smile when they look at my artwork. I’m retired now but I used to run art workshops and I find that people often don’t know they have arty talents until they try their hand at it.”
“I paint from pictures of animals and I put them in unexpected settings such as a plane in the outback or a bicycle (above)or a boat out on the water which is what I’m working on now. I also get commissions to paint peoples’ dogs, whether alive or deceased. I look into their eyes to find their personality.”
